Hillary Clinton’s Auto-Tuned Speech Is The Catchiest Campaign Song Yet

It’s the song of the 2016 presidential election, so far.

Forget all about the USA Freedom Kids, because The Gregory Brothers have taken it to the next level.

The creative geniuses behind “Songify the News” auto-tuned Hillary Clinton’s Democratic National Convention speech for the ridiculously catchy ditty that’s now going viral online.

”Me and Bernie, Bernie and me,” the Democratic presidential nominee appears to sing as she’s joined in the hilarious clip by her daughter Chelsea, President Barack Obama and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). Bill Clinton also makes a show-stopping appearance with an intense saxophone solo.

“On a truly historic night, Hillary Clinton becomes the first woman nominated for president by a major party to drop a fiery diss track ,” The Gregory Brothers wrote on their “schmoyoho” YouTube channel on Friday. The video garnered more than 100,000 views in the first 12 hours.

Check it out in the clip above.

WATCH: Needing to Be Politically Correct?

The question of being politically correct is an issue that most of us have an opinion about… and often a strong one. Whether you are a strong supporter of people being P.C. or are adamantly against it, I hope you will find some benefit – particularly a greater sense of peace – in tapping along with this video.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

A Look At This Year’s Raging Wildfires — From Space

Climate change has not only sent global temperatures spiraling out of control, it has breathed fire into Earth’s wild lands.

Fire seasons are an average 78 days longer than they were in 1970, and the number of acres scorched each year has doubled since 1980, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

If the start of the 2016 fire season is any indication, this alarming trend won’t be extinguished anytime soon. NASA is providing a unique view of the destruction by using satellites to help track and monitor fires ― valuable information for fire managers on the ground ― as well as look at how these blazes are affecting air quality and releasing greenhouse gases.

Lesley Ott, a scientist at NASA’S Goddard Space Flight Center, said the technology provides scientists with “the best view that we’ve ever had of the global picture.”

“Satellites give us a really unique perspective on fires,” Ott said in an interview posted to the space agency’s website. “We can see the hot spot while the fire’s going on, we can see the smoke that’s pouring off. And then after the fire’s completed, we can actually look at the burn scar and see the impact on vegetation, and even the vegetation regrowth in the year’s to come.”

In May, a wildfire driven by unusually hot, dry weather burned through the town of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, scorching nearly 1.5 million acres and displacing tens of thousands of people.

In California, two major wildfires ― the Soberanes fire along the Central Coast and the Sand fire around the Santa Clarita Valley near Los Angeles ― continue to rage. As of Friday, they had burned a collective 70,000 acres.

While these large fires have garnered widespread media attention, they only begin to tell the story of what’s happening in the U.S. and around the world.

“Already in the U.S. this year, more than 29,000 fires have burned 2.6 million acres,” NASA scientist Doug Morton said in an online interview. “The Amazon is the driest it’s been in 14 years, and smoke from wildfires in the Amazon can drift to southern Brazil, changing air quality and potentially impacting the [Rio de Janeiro] Olympics.”

Below, a look at some of NASA’s incredible and gut-wrenching satellite imagery of this year’s fires, from California and China, to Canada to Russia.

Always Get Back Up — Living Kyokushin Karate

Kyokushin is known as the “most feared” karate in the world. And since I’m a Kyokushin black belt, I should make people tremble when I walk by.

But let’s be real. I’m a middle-aged mother who teaches preschoolers. My fighting days are far behind me as I’ve got a handful of injuries that will plague me for the rest of my life. I’ll never be in fighting shape again. Essentially, I’m the opposite of the “most feared”.

2016-07-28-1469741807-6163964-LieshaandMartinPetrovich.png

Yet, being the most feared is not what Kyokushin means to me. It’s not how amazing our fighters are or how dangerous our current World Champion may be. It’s not even about how strong Mas Oyama was when he founded our style and he fought bulls bare-handed (yes, we can all agree that practice was horrible).

For me, Kyokushin is the mindset that reaches outside the dojo and has helped me battle life’s challenges for the past 20 years. Sure, I’ve learned discipline, control and focus. But the biggest lesson Kyokushin taught me was incredibly simple:

Always get back up.

Every black belt has his or her story of their black belt journey. I’ve broken my foot, wrist, toes and a few ribs (thanks to my son, Alex). I’ve been yelled at and given a zero in a competition. I’ve had disagreements with how our organization is run and I’ve had to deal with chauvinistic behavior from my fellow black belts. I’ve probably failed more times than I’ve succeeded. I’ve been tired, hurt, stressed and angry and kept going. Because that’s what we do.

My story is not unique or even special. Everyone who earns a black belt has sacrificed to achieve their goals. And it’s precisely that journey that has helped me survive what life’s thrown at me. Everyone gets knocked down, but not everyone gets up and asks for more.

Kyokushin black belts get back up.

Here’s how my friend Nell describes Kyokushin:

2016-07-28-1469740526-8088268-Iamkyokushin.png

Life’s journey isn’t easy for any of us. Yet, the strength gained through the martial arts is like no other. It’s the mindset that doesn’t allow me to quit, even when life throws a sucker punch when you least expect it.

We’ve been audited by the IRS and had every penny taken because of a crooked accountant.

Big deal. So we ate Ramen Noodles for a while.

We’ve had poverty, addiction, disease, and mental illnesses drag our family down.

Really? Is that the best you’ve got?

We’ve dealt with drug dealers, runaways and stalkers.

Bring. It. On.

We lost a beloved son.

Okay. We’re still climbing back from that one.

It’s not easy surviving life, even without the challenges I’ve faced. Life is incredibly hard. There are days when I want to give up and run away. There are days I’d like to scream at the world. There are days I just want to crawl back into bed and pretend I’m anyone else. Anywhere else.

But I won’t stop fighting until the day I die. And there are a few people I’d like to haunt, so death may not be strong enough to stop me.

Being Kyokushin isn’t about how tough my physical body is today, or how many fights I’ve won. It’s not about how many stripes are on my belt, or how many students I teach. Being Kyokushin means I know I have the strength to survive anything that life throws at me.

I know life’s next challenge is right around the corner. I know I’m going to be knocked out cold, laid out flat on the floor. It’s inevitable. It’s only a matter of time. It’s just how life works.

I may be bruised, bleeding, and a little broken. It may not be pretty, but I’m going to get right back up every single time.

Because I am Kyokushin.

An Introvert’s 5 Tips for Career Success

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Quiet Revolution’s Field Notes are first-hand workplace experiences written by readers like you who share the lessons they’ve learned on how they use their temperament in their workplace. Have a story to share? Submit it to QLIfieldnotes@quietrev.com.

While it appears that our extrovert world may finally be slowly shifting toward giving some credit to introverts, let’s face it: many corporations are still a long way from reaching equality between introverts and extroverts. Introverts may be respected for the work they do and usually get a pat on the shoulder, but extroverts are still the ones who command the spotlight and reap much of the recognition. Because of our very nature, we introverts are still widely believed to lack an important part of what constitutes a “modern-day personality”—the gene for career success.

Being an introvert myself, I’ve often been ignored, overlooked, and dubbed “not a team player.” It does hurt. Especially when you are surrounded by over-confident extroverts who have little to no understanding of what makes us different and that being different is not necessarily a bad thing.

Over the years, I have fought my own battle—to measure up, to stand up, and to be heard. I believe there are steps and strategies we can all explore to aim at a successful career and command the respect we deserve. What follows is my own wisdom, which I have collected throughout my professional life as a financial consultant.

We all have an opportunity to make it better for ourselves by simply playing extroverts at their own game. Here are some tips on how to get started:

1. Smile, smile, smile

There is an overwhelming amount of research, studies, and books on the science of smiling (including Charles Darwin’s own The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals). While it’s still unclear why people smile, this simple act is believed to bring great positive effects on our minds and bodies when practiced regularly. According to some scientists, it can even give us a short-term “high.” More importantly, however, in a corporate environment, smiling is one of the brand manifestations of extroversion. Smiling can help us introverts to appear more approachable, social, and upbeat. And who wouldn’t benefit from a better mood? It’s pretty easy too—it’s just a matter of practice.

2. Walk the walk

It’s no secret that straight posture, eye contact, and a head held high are all signs of confidence. It is also a way to make a great impression and to get noticed—the thing that introverts usually try to avoid at all costs. Research supports the idea that non-verbal communication, in the form of posture and gestures, constitutes the largest part of how others see us. More importantly, though, it is related to self-respect and self-assurance. While we don’t necessarily need to show off, we can still demand appreciation from others and assert that we are good at what we do and that we do mean business. Remember that slouching won’t make us invisible—it will only make us look insecure and give us a hefty medical bill from the subsequent back problems.

3. Talk the talk

Experts tell us that to make a long-lasting impression, we should avoid speaking too fast, articulate our words, and pay special attention to our tone of voice. The fear of public speaking and being the center of attention are well-known terrifying situations for most introverts. Undeniably, though, the art of expressing ourselves is a priceless skill. Words constitute a very small—but still significant—part of our communication with the world. The ability to choose the right phrases, as well as the lack of it, communicates to others the story of our personality, of our brand, and of the degree to which we are willing and motivated to succeed. An introvert can master the skill of a great conversation by joining a professional organization such as Toastmasters. Try to view any chance to speak in front of an audience as a challenge instead of a dread, and explore the speaking opportunity as preparation for the times when you will really need this skill in order to shine.

4. Become a social introvert

Just because we are introverts doesn’t mean we are to be glued to our work desks and avoid speaking to others. While we may find it undesirable to “waste time” with small talk, there is no better way to benefit our careers than by engaging in office networking for few minutes a day. At the very least, others will notice that we exist, and we may even make a few true friends along the way. If you don’t know what to say, ask others about themselves—this strategy is always a winner.

5. Play the game

It simply means one thing: learn flexibility. Yes, such advice may feel like going straight against our very nature, and it contradicts everything we stand for, but a little social chameleon-ism can, in fact, bring great benefits. In order to do this, we don’t need to change who we are or betray our principles. It merely involves showing different parts of our personality to different people so that we can better relate to them. Simply put, converse with others about things you know they are interested in. And that is really what adaptability in action is.

Being an introvert in an extrovert-dominated world is still, by no means, easy. Striving for a successful career in such a skewed environment is even more challenging. But the silver lining is that the world is not static. Public opinions have begun to shift. Research tells us over and over that introverts generally perform better and are more reliable and creative than their extroverted counterparts. Until that shift is complete, exercising some social introvert skills that still align with our personality type can help us reap the benefits of our society’s favoritism for the extrovert, outgoing personalities. By pushing ourselves a little more persistently in front of others, we can help people appreciate us for who we truly are and recognize the skills we have to bring to the table.

Clinton Campaign: Trump Needs To Guarantee He Won’t Leak Before Getting Briefed

PHILADELPHIA ― The chairman of Hillary Clinton’s campaign urged U.S. intelligence agencies on Wednesday to get an ironclad agreement from Donald Trump that he would not leak information to the Russians before providing him with presidential candidate briefings.

“I think it’s an issue that … Jim Clapper’s going to have to come to grips with,” John Podesta said in an interview with The Huffington Post, referring to the director of national intelligence. “And I think they’ll have to find a way to negotiate with him and with his campaign to get … more than assurances ― sort of some proof that they can be able to hold on to that information.”

Speaking from the site of the convention, Podesta’s remarks underscored the extent to which the event unfolding behind him had become upended by the latest controversial remarks from the other side of the ledger. Earlier that morning, Trump had encouraged Russian agencies to try to hack and leak information on Clinton’s emails, following a hack these same agencies apparently executed on the Democratic National Committee.

“This isn’t a normal political story, and it’s not funny … And for Donald Trump to suggest that a foreign power should hack the candidate of the opposing power is beyond outrageous. I think it is really disqualifying,” Podesta said.

“I don’t know how the DNI assures himself that information that is being passed on to him is going to be secure,” he added.

Choosing his words deliberately, Podesta conceded that the events of the last few days would change Clinton’s approach to Russia should she end up winning the presidency. But he also made the point that the relationship between the two countries was at a stage of general distrust well before the party committee’s emails were hacked.

“I think that she’s been very skeptical and very tough on Putin since the days that he came back into power,” Podesta said. “So I think while this is a particularly outrageous potential interference in our democratic process … if they’re interfering in our democratic process, that means only that the pressure needs to ratchet up even more than it already has been.”

In ways more profound than virtually any other campaign controversy, Trump’s wink and nod to the Russians roiled the trail on Wednesday. It wasn’t just the timing ― coming during the heart of the Democratic convention ― it was in the way it quickly sparked backlash from members of his own party, who are deeply wary of Trump’s cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin.

But for all the geopolitical dust that Trump kicked up, the Clinton campaign also found itself having to deal with an impending and potentially immediate domestic problem as well. Officials in the ranks have resigned themselves to the high likelihood that more DNC emails will leak.

The DNC has brought in a few firms to assess the extent of what has been exposed, Podesta said. The campaign itself was relying on a “high level of technical security” to monitor its own vulnerabilities.

“I think we have a better sense of information that ― files that they searched, avenues that they were exploiting,” Podesta said. “So we’re just going to have to take this one day at a time. But this is an extraordinarily serious matter that needs the attention of our intelligence agencies, the law enforcement ― and the American public has to ask itself what is going on here.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Florida Officials Find More Evidence Of Potential Local Zika Spread

By Julie Steenhuysen

CHICAGO (Reuters) – The Florida health department said on Wednesday it was investigating another two cases of Zika not related to travel to a place where the virus is being transmitted, raising the possibility of local Zika transmission in the continental United States.

The Florida health department said it has identified an additional case of Zika in Miami-Dade County, where it was already investigating a possible case of Zika not related to travel, and another case in Broward County, where it has been investigating a non-travel related case.

“Evidence is mounting to suggest local transmission via mosquitoes is going on in South Florida,” said CDC spokesman Tom Skinner said.

“These cases fit similar transmission patterns for mosquito-borne diseases such as Chikungunya that we’ve seen in South Florida in years past.”

To confirm whether Zika is being transmitted locally, epidemiologists must survey households and neighbors within a 150-yard radius around the residence of the person who has Zika, which constitutes the flying range of the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

According to the U.S. Zika response plan, Zika transmission is defined as two or more cases not due to travel or sex with an infected person that occur in a 1-mile diameter over the course of a month. Evidence of the virus in local mosquito populations can also be used to confirm local transmission.

Florida health department officials said investigations into the new cases begins today. The state is urging residents and visitors to participate in requests for urine samples by the department in the areas of investigation. These results will help the department determine the number of people affected.

In addition to the possible cases of non-travel related transmission, Florida on Wednesday reported 328 travel-related cases of Zika. The state is monitoring 53 pregnant women who had Zika infections.

Your participation — and readership — is much appreciated.

Now, on to today’s article…

(Questions have been modified for clarity and space.)

I need help breaking a cycle of behavior my family is stuck in. To explain, I’ll need to start with events from three years ago.

A that time, my younger sister, who was turning 18, was the victim of a violent crime that left her hospitalized. While she was in the hospital, our parents died, also as a result of violence.

Fast-forward to present day, and my sister, now in her early 20s, is in prison. This is her second trip there for drug-related offenses.

Given this situation, telephone calls with extended family members have become unbearable, because they follow the same script: They ask if I’ve heard how my sister is doing, and when I answer, they then launch into this whole thing about how they feel uncomfortable having a relationship with her, and how I should stay away from her too. This happens every time, without fail, often before they’ll ask how I’m doing.

This is not only frustrating but painful. I manage to go most days without thinking about the past, and I consider that a major victory. But having it brought up again just rips the scab off.

What I’ve tried to make my relatives understand is that it isn’t easy for me to write off my sister. She has no support system and is my last living immediate family member. But it doesn’t seem to matter.

I’m confused and frustrated, and I just want to break this pattern. What should I say to them?
–SatinSpectre; Marysville, OH

You should say everything you just said here: that you’re not going to abandon your sister; that these conversations are opening old wounds; and that something has to change.

I don’t know how many relatives you’re having these conversations with, but I’d make your stance clear to all of them. Pick the medium — phone call, email, whatever — that will allow you to express yourself directly and completely. Tell them that while you want them in your life (assuming you do), their presence is doing more harm than good.

If they care about and respect you, they’ll listen. And once they do, there’s a progression you can follow to ensure they continue to.

First, if they bring up your sister in the future, cut them off immediately, reminding them that’s not a path you want to go down. Don’t let their transgression pass without acknowledgement. It’s like correcting a dog that’s humping your teddy bear — you have to correct them in the moment.

Do this enough, and it should (steadily) regulate their behavior. If it doesn’t, at some point, you’ll want to consider building stronger boundaries. And that might mean cutting off contact completely.

I’m guessing the last thing you want to do is lose more family, but when you think about it, if things don’t change, why would you want to keep talking to these people? What good comes from it? They ignore your wishes and inflict nothing but pain and heartache. How is that helping you?

That’s a last-resort option, of course, but one worth stashing in your back pocket. Because what’s most important is that you do what’s best for you.

Between your sister’s destruction and your parents’ passing, you’ve been dealt a hand that could be generously described as devastating. And while you consider it a “major victory” that you rarely think about the past, that doesn’t mean your past didn’t happen and that it can no longer impact you.

It is impacting you, if in no other way than sabotaging your relationships with your extended family. It’s understandable that you don’t want to talk about it with them, but please talk about it with someone.

I’m no expert, but the aftermath of this trauma has got to be rolling around your psyche, affecting how you go through life. You wouldn’t be human if it weren’t. It’s a ticking time bomb, and the best thing you can do is start defusing it before it blows up.

Be Wary Of Studies That Deny Racial Bias In Police Shootings

Charles Kinsey. Philando Castile. Alton Sterling. Delrawn Small. Michael Brown.

Conflicting narratives emerged in the aftermath of these cases of unarmed black men brutalized or killed by police. Black Lives Matter alleges that police unfairly target black people with sometimes lethal force, even when they’re unarmed. Those who argue “blue lives matter” say police are usually justified when using force and are unfairly painted as racist.

Unfortunately, there’s little hard data to indicate whether racial bias plays a role in shootings like these. There’s still no federal database about how widespread police violence is, nor any breakdown of which demographic groups bear the brunt of that force. In the absence of statistics, each new study on police violence is treated like breakthrough research, when it’s actually a single data point in a field of study in its infancy. And worryingly, each of these piecemeal reports with unexpected, eyebrow-raising conclusions garner major headlines in the press.

Take a recent study by researchers at the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, published Monday in the journal Injury Prevention

Scientist Ted Miller concluded that minorities are no more likely than white people to be injured or killed during a stop or arrest. He used data that included stats from hospital emergency departments, a nationally representative survey of people’s experience with the police and newspaper databases of deaths linked to police intervention.

A “working study” by Harvard economist Roland Fryer, still awaiting peer review but publicized in a New York Times feature, similarly concluded that while black people were more likely to experience use of force by police, they weren’t more likely to be shot. Figures that came in from Houston even suggested that black people were less likely to be shot by police than white people. This analysis was based on self-reported data from select police departments across the U.S. (Criticisms of Fryer’s study can be found here, here and here.)

Fryer declined to give comment to The Huffington Post.

What should we make of initial data that seems to counter what many have seen in the media or, in the case of black people in America, have themselves experienced?

It’s important to note that these two analyses are just two data points in an underdeveloped but growing field of research on police interactions with civilians, says Sharad Goel, a professor at the Stanford School of Engineering and a member of the research project Law, Order and Algorithms, which aims to analyze 100 million traffic stops throughout the U.S. to look for evidence of racial disparities and discrimination. Goel was not involved in either study, but given the lack of a national clearinghouse for any of this data, he hesitates to claim that a single scientific study shows that, once arrested, minorities have similar rates of injury and death compared to white people.

This kind of, frankly, irresponsible narrative, saying way more than their data can say, muddies [the] waters.

We don’t have a national database on traffic stops, we don’t have a national database on pedestrian stops, we don’t have a national database on use of force,” Goel said. “It’s not a great state of affairs for understanding police encounters with the public.”

Perhaps more urgently, while the scientific community may understand that this research is preliminary and ongoing, the public may not see that distinction. Careless media reporting of Fryer and Miller’s results, made without context from past studies or other experts, could have serious consequences that extend far beyond a day’s news cycle, said Phillip Atiba Goff, president of the Center for Policing Equity and a professor of policing equity at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York.

“When elite media outlets cite people with elite credentials, it has the potential to influence money and power,” said Goff, who has published reports on police interactions with the public. “It’s not really a good idea given how important the topic is in the national media, to our national conversation, and how bright the spotlight is shining, for people to pick it up and act like tourists.”

Goff, who maintains a police behavior database, tracking stats like stops and use of force, explained that philanthropic organizations that want to fund racial justice issues may believe, based on headlines, that there is no racial bias in police shootings. Politicians may believe the same, and not push as hard on legislation to hold police departments accountable.

“This kind of, frankly, irresponsible narrative, saying way more than their data can say, muddies those waters,” he continued. “[It] delays policy innovations that can save lives.”

How did we get here?

Following the police-involved deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, President Barack Obama created the Task Force on 21st-Century Policing to build public trust between law enforcement and citizens, while simultaneously reducing crime.

The task force presented its final report in May 2015, listing 59 specific recommendations to address what the group identified as the most pressing concerns surrounding citizens’ strained relationship with police. It also pointed to systemic problems that impact policing, such as poverty, segregation, unequal education, housing and access to health care.

The report also stressed transparency. It urged the president to require police agencies to collect and report data to the federal government about officer-involved shootings. But this hasn’t happened, and it may have to do in part with police departments’ reluctance to make this data public

“We need to measure in order to show progress or setbacks,” Laurie Robinson, the tasks force’s co-chair and a professor of criminology, law and society at George Mason University, told HuffPost.

The United States’ deeply entrenched gun culture may be another reason we’re not studying firearms violence.

The Dickey Amendment, which passed in 1996 following criticism from the National Rifle Association about “anti-gun advocacy research,” effectively halted federal gun violence research for the next 20 years. Since then, more than half a million people have died by firearms in the United States, and without funding, researchers fled the field.

It’s in this climate, armed with few data points on firearm violence and no federal database tracking use of force among police officers, that agencies and the government are trying to overhaul policing.

We’re only just getting started

There’s no doubt that per capita, black people in the U.S. died disproportionately in interactions with the police in 2015, according to newspapers like the Washington Post and The Guardian in the U.K., which have stepped in to fill the holes in our federal databases by creating their own police shooting tracker. The majority of available research also supports the notion that black people are stopped by police more than other racial groups.

But is this indicative of higher crime or traffic violation rates within this group, as some critics of the Black Lives Matter movement claim, or does racial bias exist up and down the law enforcement spectrum, unfairly targeting black communities for traffic violations to raise municipal revenue (as was found in Ferguson, Missouri) and arresting them for breaking laws that disproportionately affect people of color?

Complicating matters is the fact that not all bias is explicit. Intriguing studies on implicit bias, which find that black boys are viewed as older and less “innocent” than white boys, or tests of individual implicit bias that measure the presence of unconscious racial prejudice, make accusations of racism almost simplistic. While overtly racist cops certainly do exist, the question of implicit bias playing a role in an officer’s decision to use force is a much more subtle and slippery research subject.

As more data emerges on police use of force, it’s important to keep in mind that we’ve only just begun trying to figure out if and how racial bias plays a role in the way U.S. police stop, arrest and use force on people.

“We have relatively little rigorous scientific evidence on either side of the case,” Goel said. “I’m hoping that not only will these studies increase our understanding of this issue, but that they will also help us design solutions to this problem.”

Be wary of those whom Goff calls academic “tourists,” or people with no prior background on an issue who pick up a subject and treat it with a one-and-done approach. Unseasoned scientists may make the mistake that Miller made: In the concluding section of his paper, he had recommendations for better data collection and better training for at-risk groups on “appropriate behavior” before police, but didn’t call out any changes police departments need to make to decrease the numbers of fatal encounters.

Miller called the omission accidental in an interview with HuffPost, but Goff likened the recommendations to instructing a baby seal to wear a helmet to protect itself from clubbing.

“We need better and more scientists in this space,” he said.

The Post-Pregnancy Handbook: The Only Book That Tells What the First Year After Childbirth Is Really All About—Physically, Emotionally, Se

While a number of books exist which deal with various aspects of the postnatal experience – breastfeeding, exercise, motherhood, post-partum depression – this is the first complete source of information on what a woman experiences both physically and emotionally in the days, weeks and months after childbirth. Bernie Sanders’ Last-Minute Crisis

Bernie Sanders may not have dropped the ball with his highly anticipated speech at the Democratic National Convention on Monday night, but he did drop something else: his speech.

Since the stumble occurred about an hour before Sanders’ turn at the podium, this probably wasn’t the only copy of his speech.

But just check out the look on Sanders’ face:

Naturally, someone added the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” theme to the scene:

Read the full text of Sanders’ speech here.

The Big Idea Behind Integrative Medicine

2016-07-25-1469470698-7845448-Hippocrates.jpg

Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.

Hippocrates

Integrative medicine is an ecosystem of support for pursuing your own health and well-being. Inside that ecosystem is someone who cares about you.
Integrative medicine is emerging from a successful history of treating physical ailments that often eluded Western modalities of care to become an ecosystem of support for health and wellness. Possibly the most visible sign of this development is the increasing attention of integrative medicine to primary care, where prevention and regard for the whole person is most critical.

What distinguishes integrative medicine as an approach is that it distances itself from the traditional model of a patient dependent on an expert. Rather, it embraces a genuine clinical partnership in which both the patient and the care provider have something to offer in pursuit of the patient’s optimal health. The care provider embodies not only clinical knowledge, which is the result of his or her training, but also qualities not always associated with experts. These include curiosity, emotional support, collaboration, humor, and the ability to articulate options and alternatives without judgment. Patients are participants as well, offering knowledge of what has worked for them in the past, providing information that can’t be quantified on a medical report, and finding meaning and purpose in their response to the challenges faced when confronted by illness.

The power of integrative medicine comes from acknowledging the multiple dimensions that can cause illness and an equal respect for the various modalities that can address healing and cure. Freed from a traditional repertoire of either pharmacological or surgical solutions (pills or knife), integrative medicine practitioners have expanded the treatment landscape to include nutrition, bodywork, chiropractic, mindfulness-based stress reduction, integrative psychotherapy, and ancient healing practices such as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. From exploring the optimal chemistry for our digestive tract to treating autoimmune conditions to finding novel ways to address trauma, integrative medicine is showing us a whole new way to educate ourselves about health and take responsibility for our own well-being.

The emerging field of integrative care is as much an idea as a set of practices. The idea is of an ecosystem of support, an intersecting set of relationships that address the whole human package — body, mind, heart, and soul. And at the center of this ecosystem of support are people who care about you. The ability to be seen by a team of providers and staff who value you as a whole person is a central premise permeating all other techniques and practices.

I am reminded of the support that the poet W.H. Auden gave Dr. Oliver Sacks when he was composing Awakenings, a book about his work with a group of patients who had been in a decades-long sleep and were now coming back to consciousness. Auden wrote: “You’re going to have to go beyond the clinical. … Be metaphorical, be mystical, be whatever you need.” I find here the implication that it is our deep regard for the human condition that moves us beyond the complacent and routine. It is in our profound respect for service to others that we touch mystery and wholeness. At the heart of integrative medicine is a bold invitation to go beyond the clinical, into regions that capture our hearts and imagination. Caring is fundamental. Nothing else really matters without love as an organizing principle. Or as one patient I know told her physician, “I just want someone who gives a damn.”

Caring relationships can and should be with our care providers, but they must also be evident in our social networks, our family, and our community, and in our relationship with nature. Beyond the particular type of care we receive is a broader view of health that includes the social and relational. Caring is about how we manifest love in the form of looking out for each other, witnessing, supporting, provoking, and optimizing our capacity to face health and illness, life and death, with dignity. Wise old Hippocrates had it right: Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

I had the opportunity to talk about all this with Dr. Jeff Draisin, co-medical director of the Institute for Health and Healing. IHH operates a network of clinics in Northern California and has pioneered integrative medicine practice there for nearly 25 years. Here are seven distinctions he articulated about the emerging field of integrative care. I think he captures something here of essence, particular themes that direct our attention to what matters most and the attributes that together make a whole.

Integrative care does the following:

  • It shifts our understanding of care from a focus on illness and shortcomings to a focus on well-being, personal growth, and transformation.
  • It cares for the whole person by addressing mind, body, and spirit as three interacting elements that together result in health and well-being.
  • It helps individuals craft healthy relationships with their physical bodies, mental outlook, and emotional well-being. Beyond fitness and exercise is the relationship we have with our whole self.
  • It treats nutrition — what we put in our body — as medicine. Beyond diets and supplements is an understanding of what helps our body to feel vital and how best to decrease the effects of toxins.
  • It embraces the latest discoveries of neuroscience and mind-related health for personal well-being — from mindfulness stress reduction to the benefits of awe and wonder.
  • It creates a true partnership that joins the best of Western medicine with ancient healing traditions and complementary modalities. The guiding intent is to restore harmony and address imbalances that detract from optimal health.
  • It values psychological and spiritual forces as food for the soul. Feeling valued, having purpose, and finding meaning are all essential elements of healing and health.

If we pursue health practices and policies along these lines, we will transform health care and bring the art of caring into the heart of medicine.

California City Bans Deceptive Ads By Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Clinics

OAKLAND, Calif. ― The city council here has tightened regulations around pregnancy clinics that try to fool prospective patients with advertisements falsely suggesting that they perform abortions.

The ordinance, passed last week, makes Oakland the second U.S. city to target advertising by so-called crisis pregnancy centers that mask an anti-abortion agenda, according to organizations promoting abortion rights. San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in 2011.

Some such clinics have used billboards and online ads to trick women into thinking that they perform abortions or offer other emergency contraceptive care, according to Amy Everitt, NARAL Pro-Choice California director. She said she’s troubled that searching Google for information about abortions in Oakland brings up results for nearby centers that don’t provide the service.

“When women are seeking reproductive health care, it is time-sensitive and urgent,” said Everitt. “When you put an entity or organization in the way that’s specifically targeting them to deceive them into wasting their time and delay them from accessing other care, what that creates for the women and families of California is a public harm.”

Anti-abortion centers, also known as limited-service pregnancy centers, outnumber Planned Parenthood’s 115 clinics in California, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman said. An exact count is difficult because many centers are not registered with authorities, and they often change names. A list compiled by California ProLife Council includes 190 crisis pregnancy centers.

The problem extends to websites that include inaccurate medical information about pregnancies, or that overstate the dangers of abortions and the morning-after pill. Oakland officials representing city council and the city attorney highlighted passages on OptionOnline.org, which refers women to crisis pregnancy centers in the Bay Area, as the kind of misleading medical advice that might run afoul of the law.

“Many pregnancies result in miscarriage so an abortion might not be necessary,” the website says. Another passage warns that the Plan B and emergency contraception pills “can actually hurt you if you take them while you are pregnant.”

Violators can be fined and sued by Oakland’s city attorney if they refuse to take down contested ads.

Support Circle, a licensed medical clinic with three sites in the Bay Area, including one in Oakland, is one facility that has relied on deceptive advertising to shade its anti-abortion stance, according to Oakland officials.

“Support Circle is a safe place where you can sort out your thoughts and feelings in a non-pressured environment, and make healthy, well-informed choices in line with your core values,” the clinic website says. The organization counsels against abortion.

“Clients can meet with medical professionals and receive information about early pregnancy symptoms, the morning after pill, abortion, the abortion pill, emergency contraception, Plan B, Ella, pregnancy and drugs, pregnancy and smoking, pregnancy and alcohol, and miscarriage,” the Support Circle website continues.

Support Circle did not respond to The Huffington Post’s inquiries.

A conservative legal organization that has represented crisis pregnancy centers said Oakland’s new law is flawed. The ordinance assumes women don’t research the services offered at crisis pregnancy centers before going to one, said Brad Dacus, Pacific Justice Institute president.

“My fear is that abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood will succeed in achieving their end goal that women in crises will not receive compassionate counseling to alternatives and that more women will abort their unborn babies,” Dacus said. He said the law was motivated by Planned Parenthood’s desire for more customers.

County health officials encouraged Oakland to pass the law, saying crisis pregnancy centers interfere with prenatal care in other ways. Some of the clinics target residents of low-income neighborhoods and force women to transfer to doctors and clinics 20 weeks to 24 weeks into their pregnancies, when it’s too late to obtain an abortion, according to a June letter from Alameda County Public Health Department officials. Doctors and clinics that pick up these patients have complained that the crisis pregnancy centers delay sharing critical lab results and other medical records, according to the letter.

“We do not have the resources to compete with the misleading advertising of the crisis pregnancy centers,” the letter says.

San Francisco’s law was challenged by an anti-abortion center that contended it violated free speech rights. A federal judge upheld the ordinance in 2015, saying commercial speech can be regulated.

“Oakland respects the activists’ right to express their views and counsel against abortion. If their message is truly compelling, they should have no problem being honest about what they do and do not offer,” City Attorney Barbara Parker said in a statement. “If they refuse to be honest, the City Attorney will have the power to sue violators to hold them accountable.”

John Oliver Reveals The Real Theme Of The 2016 GOP Convention

The real theme of the “mismanaged shit-show” that was the Republican National Convention wasn’t policies based on facts.

“It was a four-day exercise in emphasizing feelings over facts,” John Oliver said on Sunday.

After claiming the RNC was the “most apocalyptic thing” to ever happen to Cleveland, the  “Last Week Tonight” host tried to “figure out what the fuck just happened.”

He played clips showing various convention speakers saying they felt the country was in a bad spot, people did not feel safe and the economy feels stuck.

“What do you mean it feels stuck? The economy is about numbers, feelings are supposed to be irrelevant,” Oliver said, adding the emotional theme reached its apex in Donald Trump’s terrifying acceptance speech which was “light on concrete policy but heavy on provoking strong emotions.”

Check it out in the clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

2016-07-22-1469207541-594798-11780058_10153129790107149_3221575478209974355_o.jpg

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

Reinventing a Canadian Crop As a Sweet Summer Treat

Timber. Maple Syrup. When asked of Canadian exports, you’d be forgiven if pulses didn’t also spring to mind. Yet Canadian farmers are one of the biggest producers of pulses, the edible seeds of the legume family, such as peas, chickpeas and beans. In 2014, exports were valued at over $ 3 billion, shipping to more than 150 countries around the world each year.

But why don’t Canadians make more use of this key crop in our own country?

There are many reasons why we should. Obesity rates in Canada tripled between 1985 and 2011. Pulses offer a food source that is not only high in protein and fibre, but remarkably low in fat. Furthermore, these plants require much less water and fertilizer to grow than other crops, making them a sustainable choice for farmers who wish to protect our natural resource base, and minimise agriculture’s global greenhouse gas emissions.

We believe Canadian consumers are not enticed to put more pulses on their own plates, due to a lack of product innovation. A competition that has run across the globe this year, as part of the United Nations’ International Year of Pulses, seeks to change that.

It inspired us to create BiotaGelata, a non-dairy gelato made from fermented bean milk. It has all the creaminess of a milk product, but instead of being high in fat, is high in protein. The flavours – maple walnut, dark chocolate cassis, raspberry lemonade, and passion fruit, would rival any traditional ice cream in a taste test.

2016-07-25-1469437147-343059-BiotaGelata.jpg

Not only did we want to find an innovative new use for a crop that Canada has in abundance, we wanted to create a product that would tap into the recent consumer trend towards dairy and soy alternatives. Around 16 per cent of Canadians would class themselves as lactose intolerant. That is why we have seen a rise in milks, yogurts and even ice creams that cater to this market.

However, the sugar content in alternatives can be high. BiotaGelata, on the other hand, contains less sugar than other dairy free items that often use soy as a base, as raw kidney beans contain 2.2 grams of sugar per 100 grams versus 7 grams per 100 grams for raw soybeans. The probiotics in the gelato, which are created in the fermenting process, also provide bacteria that are good for our guts. We have found that consumers are increasingly looking for this type of fermented products because it’s a healthy alternative to dairy yogurt.

This month, we took our innovation to Chicago, to the Institute of Food Technologists Expo. We pitched the product to a host of potential investors and retailers, in the hope that BiotaGelata could be coming to a freezer section near you soon.

Alberta’s agriculture is much more diverse than people realise – and we think it is time we began to make the most of it through new products Canadians can get excited about.

Understanding Institutional Shareholder Activism: A Comparative Study Of The Uk And China

Understanding Institutional Shareholder Activism: A Comparative Study Of The Uk And China

Institutional shareholder participation has long been considered as vital to good corporate governance yet its potential does not seem to have been realized. The recent banking crisis exposed the passivity of some institutional shareholders, many of whom appear to have chosen to sell their stakes in the banks rather than intervene or challenge the board when they realized the strategies followed by the banks were excessively risky. Institutional shareholders'' role to scrutinize and monitor the decisions of boards and executive management in the banking sector in the UK is considered by many to be a failure, resulting in the phenomenon of ''ownerless corporations'', as described by Lord Myners. In China, despite the fast rising of institutional investment in the securities market, institutional shareholders have not yet played a contributory role in monitoring corporate managers in listed companies.Drawing on empirical evidence this book seeks to systematically analyses institutional shareholders'' incentives to activism to explain when and why shareholder activism will occur. The book puts forward a model which explains the factors that determine institutional shareholders'' propensity for activism. The model both elaborates the collective benefits of activism as a means of achieving managerial accountability asks whether and when shareholder activism is rational for any individual shareholder. The book then goes to on to apply these finding to both the UK and China in order to explain the varying levels of shareholder activism in each jurisdiction. The book is the first to take an in-depth look at institutional share-holder activism in China providing prescriptions to promote greater shareholder engagement and exploring the potential it holds for improving corporate governance in the region.

It’s Time to Stand Up for Truth and Intelligence

In a time when the American news media focused on reporting facts, rather than entertaining the public, iconic broadcast journalist Walter Cronkite made a comment about American values and education that seems even more powerful today. Averred Cronkite, “”[w]hatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation.”

Indeed, as “the most trusted man in America” well understood, nothing is more costly to a democratic society than ignorance. We are seeing this on a daily basis today in the U.S. Much of the violence Americans are seeing is a product of ignorance, as is much of the rhetoric accepted by supporters of the GOP.

Donald Trump’s apparent ignorance about topics ranging from economics to international affairs has been well documented, but far more troubling is the ignorance of his followers, who do not appear to have the critical thinking skills or perhaps simply the reliable information necessary to see ignorance, lies, and twisted truths when they encounter them.

The fear mongering that Trump has succeeded in using to gain supporters can be successful only in a society governed not by information and intelligence, but by fear and ignorance. Unfortunately, the GOP’s leadership champions ignorance and distortion of fact.

When candidates make ridiculous claims such as Ben Carson’s publicly expressed view that the Pyramids of Giza were not tombs, but grain silos built by the Biblical son of Jacob to get ready for the famine in Genesis or when Donald Trump comments about Ted Cruz’s father on the basis of a report from the National Enquirer, it’s a symptom of deeper problems. Such comments would not be taken seriously by a public that was well informed and would be immediately refuted by party leadership, unless of course that leadership is itself stunningly ignorant or cynically willing to turn a deaf ear on the dangers of ignorance and lies in order to gain power.

Nor would these types of comments gain any traction if the news media uniformly called them out on the grounds that they lack verity. As it stands, only parts of the news media see their job as upholding truth.

The Washington Post clearly is one media outlet that recognizes its responsibility in the American democratic system. It just published a full-page editorial on the dangers of a Trump presidency. The newspaper notes that Mr. Trump’s ignorance, arrogance, and aggressiveness combined with his “politics of denigration and division” present a clear threat to the American democratic system.

This is correct, but the threat is really much more pernicious. The true danger to American democracy lies in a significant portion of the voting public that lacks the ability or information necessary to recognize what a threat Mr. Trump actually represents. Rather than drawing support, his wanton disregard for facts and open ignorance of the Constitution as noted by the Post should send a shiver through anyone invested in democracy.

Americans are faced with a very serious choice this November. In the past, whether Republican or Democrat, it has seemed clear that presidential candidates have shared a commitment to protecting the Constitution and democratic values, even if their specific ideas about how best to protect those things vary. It is not at all clear that Mr. Trump shares that commitment.

It’s a sad reality that the U.S. has arrived at this point, but we are here and it is time for those who support truth, facts, and intelligence–whether they are conservatives or liberals–to work hard to protect American democracy. The November election is nothing less than a vote on the future of that democratic system.

If we fail, and elect Mr. Trump, we face a very real possibility of paying that hefty price Walter Cronkite warned us to avoid. Whether it is through libraries, schools, or the media, there is nothing more important than ensuring that our society is well informed and able to recognize genuine threats to democracy, particularly when they come in the guise of claims to make America great again.

As a journalist, Mr. Cronkite recognized his most important job was not to entertain but to educate the public. As members of the Fourth Estate, journalists today need to, perhaps more than ever, recognized that their job is to protect democracy by informing the public. The Washington Post took this responsibility very seriously; one would hope that other news outlets follow their lead.

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

Bill Maher Reveals ’25 More Things You Don’t Know’ About Hillary Clinton

Bill Maher has been imagining what Hillary Clinton’s rivals would say in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me,” ever since the Democratic nominee answered the magazine’s questions herself in April.

In recent weeks, the “Real Time with Bill Maher” host has poked fun at Bernie Sanders, Ted Cruz and Donald TrumpAnd this week, with the Democratic National Convention just days away, it was Clinton’s turn to be spoofed.

“We’ve done a bunch of the other candidates and we thought we’d circle back because this is her big week coming up,” Maher said Friday, before letting loose with such wisecracks as her “secret service codename is ‘Nutcracker” and she is surprised nobody’s noticed “that I’ve switched from pantsuits to space suits.”

Check out the clip above to see what else was included in the list.

Here’s how Maher previously spoofed Sanders:

This is how Maher imagined Ted Cruz would reply:

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

For EFT with kids, please visit: www.TheWizardsWish.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

Related: If You Want Less Police Violence, Hire More Female Cops

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

‘Daily Show’ And Rosie O’Donnell Reveal Donald Trump’s ‘Very Very Incredible Deal’

Donald Trump likes everything bigger, so on Thursday night, as he accepted the Republican nomination for president, he didn’t have to settle for just one biography film. He got two… and that’s YUGE.

Actor Jon Voight narrated the official film shown at the Republican National Convention. Hours later, “The Daily Show” aired a much less official film, narrated by comedian and Trump opponent Rosie O’Donnell

“The Very Very Incredible Deal” is an overview of Trump’s life, including a possible explanation for his allegedly tiny hands

Check out the full film in the clip above.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Donald Trump Flunks Actual Sanity Test Given By Keith Olbermann

Time for some armchair psychiatry.

Sports and political commentator Keith Olbermann used the 20 items on the Hare Psychopathy Checklist ― an actual clinical tool used to help diagnose psychopathy ― to assess Donald Trump.

The results?

Well, let’s just say the GOP presidential candidate probably won’t be bragging about his YUGE numbers on this one.

Read Olbermann’s column in Vanity Fair, or watch his analysis of the test in the clip above, which was posted online by the magazine on Thursday.

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

In GOP Convention’s Shadow, Obamacare Is Paying Big Dividends

CLEVELAND ― The Republicans gathering inside the Quicken Loans Arena don’t care too much about the nitty-gritty of policy. But if there’s one substantive issue that generates passion among convention delegates and party leaders, it’s Obamacare.

They think it crushes freedom. They think it’s a handout. And they think it’s a policy disaster.

At the Neighborhood Family Practice, which serves a racially diverse, low-income area about six miles west of downtown, the clinic staff has a slightly different perspective.

For them, the Affordable Care Act isn’t an ideological abstraction, to be loved or hated for what it represents. It’s a part of their daily lives, a program that has dramatically changed the way they conduct business. And they say it’s been a godsend.

The main reason is the part of Obamacare that’s been most controversial in Ohio: the expansion of Medicaid eligibility. Republican Gov. John Kasich exercised that option over the strong objections of conservative activists and even his own Republican legislature.

Before the Affordable Care Act became law, the Medicaid program in Ohio looked like the Medicaid program in most other states back then. It was available only to certain categories of poor people, like children and pregnant women. Today, with the law in place, states receive generous federal support if they choose to drop the old restrictions and make Medicaid available to basically everybody in a household where the income falls below 133 percent of the poverty line, or $ 26,313 for a family of three.

To the surprise of many, Kasich made a passionate moral case for taking up the federal government’s offer, arguing that the state had an obligation to help those in need. He overcame the final political and legal hurdles in 2013, allowing enrollment in the expanded program to begin the following January.

Since that time, Ohio’s Medicaid rolls have swelled by more than 600,000, significantly exceeding initial projections.

Those numbers anger and frighten the program’s conservative critics, who decry the program’s cost. But the extra spending on Medicaid, most of which is coming from the federal government and not Ohio, is just one component of the Affordable Care Act ― a program that, nationwide, has cost less than anticipated and projections suggest is actually reducing the federal deficit.

Meanwhile, at clinics like the Neighborhood Family Practice, the surge in Medicaid enrollment has changed the patient mix dramatically ― and with it, the clinics’ finances.

Previously, a quarter of the people getting care at the Neighborhood Family Practice were uninsured. Now, less than one-tenth are. With so many more paying patients, the clinic has been able to increase its capacity. The number of full clinic facilities has grown, from two to five, and the organization now operates a pair of clinics in public schools as well. Patient visits have increased more than 50 percent since 2011, around the time that a pilot version of the Ohio Medicaid expansion began

But the impact isn’t just in how many people are coming to the Neighborhood Family Practice, staff say. It’s also in the kind of care they receive once they arrive.

Erick Kauffman, the clinic’s chief medical officer, said that in the old days, staff were constantly scrambling to help patients obtain medical supplies or follow-up care, whether by scrounging for free prescription samples or begging specialists to see people without insurance.

“We got good at it,” Kauffman said, “but it … really resulted in care that was substandard. You shouldn’t have to change your antidepressants every month because that’s what we happen to find in the supply closet. You shouldn’t be swapping your insulin, or waiting for a long time to get the tests you need, just because you can’t pay for them.”

Now that kind of thing happens a lot less, Kauffman said, allowing the clinic to focus more on helping its patients get better ― or keeping them from getting sick in the first place. “Instead of struggling to break even, we have a slight margin now, and we can use it to invest in programs like counseling, school-based health care, things that we couldn’t do otherwise and that will help the community,” he said.

You have people who are functional, stable citizens whose lives are falling apart … But with Medicaid they can get their lives back on track, get back to work.
Erick Kauffman of the Neighborhood Family Practice

Behavioral health is one area in which the clinic can do a lot more than it could before, thanks to newly hired therapists and, for the first time, a room dedicated exclusively to counseling and psychiatric consultations.

Wellness has been another priority. Today the clinic offers parenting training for pregnant women and new mothers, as well as classes for all patients on nutrition and cooking. The hope is to reach people with conditions like diabetes and teach them to manage their conditions better, thereby minimizing or avoiding altogether the complications that would lead to costly treatment later.

Megan Meister, director of community engagement, described one patient who had multiple chronic conditions, including diabetes, but has participated in some of the wellness initiatives and come in for regular preventive care. According to Meister, the patient’s blood glucose levels and weight are both down. “So she’s taking less medication, and she’s less likely to go to the ER. That saves taxpayers money.”

Anecdotes like that obviously don’t prove that better preventive care and other benefits of Medicaid expansion will actually reduce what the government, or society as a whole, spends on health care. Past efforts along those lines have frequently been fruitless. But an assessment of an early version of Medicaid expansion in Ohio suggested that, if patients are part of an integrated system with clinics and hospitals, spending more upfront to keep people healthy ends up costing no more money, and maybe a little less, over the long run.

Medicaid expansion’s effects on the people who enroll is less ambiguous. Conservative critics like to point out that many specialists won’t take Medicaid patients, because the reimbursement levels are so low. Some critics have even argued that, overall, Medicaid leaves people worse off than if they had no insurance at all. But research has shown that the program, despite its real flaws, leaves people better off financially and, possibly, healthier as well.

That research on Medicaid comes from all over the country, with the most influential new studies arriving from Massachusetts and Oregon. As for Ohio, Kauffman said, patients certainly appear to be better off ― particularly those middle-aged patients who, prior to expansion, would lose coverage and have no way to regain it before Medicare kicked in.

“You have people in their 50s or 60s,” Kauffman explained. “They fell out of the workforce ― maybe they didn’t keep up their skills or they got bad knees, though not bad enough to get disability [insurance]. … You have people who are functional, stable citizens whose lives are falling apart. It’s heartbreaking. But with Medicaid they can get their lives back on track, get back to work.”
